A Novel of the Himalayas
Village of Phortse -- Everest's summit in the distance
Everest from Satellite
Mt. Everest is the three-sided peak in the center of the satellite photograph. The north face is in shade. The horseshoe shaped Western Cwm forms the head of the Khumbu Glacier. The Kangshung Glacier flows to the lower left. The nGozumba glacier is seen on the upper right. Its right hand fork terminates at the icefall below the Nup-La, the 19,000’ pass which marks the frontier between Nepal and China (Tibet); there it forms the head of the large West Rongbuk Glacier on the lower right.
